Garces Vs. Symon - Iron Chef America Tournament Of Champions Winner

Garces Vs Symon Iron Chef Tournament of Champions

The final battle of Iron Chef America: Tournament of Champions had Iron Chef Michael Symon and his hat going up against Iron Chef Jose Garces, where the secret ingredient was pretzels.  Jose Garces defeated Marc Forgione and then Masahuru Morimoto to get here, while Michael Symon had a bye, and then defeated Geoffrey Zakarian.

With the new format of Iron Chef America, Iron Chef Symon was ahead by 5 after the first dish for receiving a 14, while Chef Garces received a 9.  The culinary curveball was then announced, in which the chefs had to incorporate blow torches into at least one of their dishes.

After the judges scored all of the dishes, Michael Symon received a total of 79 points (first dish, taste, culinary curveball, originality, plating), while Jose Garces received 74 points.  The first dish happened to be the difference in this battle.

This meant that Michael Symon was the winner of battle pretzels, and was crowned the winner of the first ever Iron Chef America Tournament of Champions competition.  Michael Symon still has the best winning percentage among all Iron Chef's past and present, and he proved why during this series with two easy wins.

What were your thoughts on the series?  If they do it again, maybe Bobby Flay will compete rather than just judge.

  1. Was it fair for Bobby Flay to judge when he and
Michael Symon are good personal friends?

  2. Of course! It happens all the time. Garces got farther than expected, due to the unfair secret ingredient vs Morimoto.

  4. I think the whole thing was a publicity stunt to make Garces look like he actually belongs. Not!

  5. I'm only a casual viewer of ICA (truth be told, I likely follow it more here than actually on FN) but does it seem to anyone else that since the change in format, whoever has the lead after round one tends to hold the lead for the win?

  6. He belongs more than a Spike or Marcel. I still can't believe those clowns were even considered for a slot.

  9. I really think that anyone who was the judge would have found Micheal to be the best. Not only is he a great cook, but a great personality and is not camera shy. He has no chip on his shoulder like Garces does AND HE LOVES TO COOK. As much as I love Bobby, Mike is my most recent favorite. Don"t get me wrong, Bobby by far is the best cook of all and his recipes are wonderful.

  10. The secret ingredients were terrible. Pretzels? Potato chips? PB&J? Liver? What ever happened to difficult ingredients like live fish or exotic ingredients like Mangalitsa pork? Heck, some of the best and most interesting dishes came when the secret ingredients were simple ingredients like trout, asparagus, pizza dough and hamburger meat.

  11. Bobby was only one of three judges. I think Michael Symon would have won easily no matter who judged.

  12. I do not know how the judges can still be hungry after eating the first chef's 5 courses?
Food taste better when your very hungry n not so much when you already ate several dishes?

  13. Bobby Flay is an a**hole (see his throw down show), and Garces is only an "Iron Chef" for marketing demographic reasons. The guy never comes up with anything interesting.
