Here is some recent news and links relating to Food Network shows and chefs/personalities:
- Giada De Laurentiis was on The Tonight Show starring Jimmy Fallon last night, and here is the video of her playing catch phrase again. Last year she played and was terrible, and this year she loses and is obnoxious once again. The 2nd video from last night is Giada doing a cooking demo. Also, today is Giada's 44th birthday.
- Alton Brown shared a picture (pictured right) on Instagram that said, "To be legal, all #cutthroatkitchen cash must feature this camera icon." So if you thought the cash in the briefcase was real, it is not.
- Food Network's Trisha Yearwood will be releasing her first album in seven years (Link). Also, the fifth season of Trisha's Southern Kitchen premieres on Food Network this Saturday.
- Nikki Dinki from season 9 of Food Network Star will be on a show called Junk Food Flip which will be on the Cooking Channel August 27th at 9:30pm (Link).
- Worst Cooks In America is casting for season 6 of the show, and it looks like it will be Anne Burrell against Bobby Flay again.
- A new show Food Truck Face-Off will premiere on the Food Network on October 2nd, and will be hosted by Jesse Palmer (Link). Each week teams will compete for the prize of a food truck.
- There was recently an article on Salon which said Guy Fieri destroyed the Food Network. Allen Salkin (author of From Scratch: Inside the Food Network) sticks up for Guy Fieri in another article on Salon, and places the blame on management.
Food Truck Face Off originally had a short (pilot?) run on Cooking Channel, where it was hosted by Spike Mendelsohn. This seem to be a new pattern for Food Network, as it did the same thing with Save My Bakery.
ReplyDeleteI used to be a huge Giada fan, but seeing her personality in "real life" has totally turned me off. Her calm, gentle demeanor on her show was very nice to watch. However, last year on Thanksgiving Live she was a total obnoxious brat. Her appearances on the Today Show and shows like Jimmy Fallon continue to show her real, obnoxious personality. I won't be watching her shows or buying her cookbooks any longer.
ReplyDeleteI don't care for her fake smile
ReplyDeleteI should subscribe to the Cooking Channel. I'd love to check out Junk Food Flip. Food Truck Face Off sounds interesting too.
ReplyDeleteI used to watch her cooking show until that Thanksgiving Live stunt last year.
ReplyDeleteGlad to see Nikki getting her own show. She deserved to be in the finale of FNS.
ReplyDeleteI almost always get second hand embarrassment when I watch Giada outside a 100% controlled environment.
ReplyDeleteI always want things to work out, it is just how I am wired. I prefer the show Restaurant Takeover on the Cooking Channel. The owner and the production company each put up 15k. It is fake, fun and has a lot of stupid drama built in or fabricated. However...
ReplyDeleteThe owners have skin in the game. They pay 50% of the renovation & they are closed for an entire week.
End result, better craftsmanship and some pretty cool restaurants. I'm sure a bunch of them have closed too, but it is fun to watch.
I liked the Allen Salkin article. Very informative. What was the dispute between Alton & FN?
ReplyDeleteI've never seen that show. I need to get Cooking Channel.
ReplyDeleteAnd just like Thanksgiving Live last year where she talked over everyone (including the lovely Ina Garten) and made it all about her, she did the same in this video, talking/screaming while the other team was trying to play. So cannot stand her.
ReplyDeleteI'd only heard that Alton refused to do Justin's show so hearing that FN and Alton had a dispute sheds a new light on it. I'd love to know what was behind the dispute.
ReplyDeleteI also liked Salkin's article. I really enjoyed his book about FN. I'd recommend it to anyone that would like to more of FN's history. It is tough going at some points because there are a lot of people involved behind the scenes of FN and the author names them all, gives background info and what their history was with FN. Overall though, I learned a lot and learned some interesting stuff about most of the FN stars.
Salkin got it wrong as to when Lenny's "indiscretions" became public knowledge. As those of us who read and post here know, Lenny was outed before the final viewer voting, not after he won, as Salkin states. It's just that not enough people know about Lenny's ugliness to give their votes to someone else.
ReplyDeleteI would like to know why Justin and Alton had a falling out. On FNS Alton was a HUGE Justin fan.
ReplyDeleteNot sure about your cable setup Autumn, but we have DirecTV and to get Cooking Channel requires an upgrade with a steep jump in price, so we opted not to. A lot of people I know say they like it better than FN, but I just can't see the price they're asking.
ReplyDeleteI really thought she was drunk during that Thanksgiving Live broadcast. She went from bad to worse and it seemed that the lower the level of wine in her glass, the worse she was. I turned off the special because you couldn't even hear because she was busy talking over everyone.
ReplyDeleteI don't really remember Nikki. I looked her up and the picture on her blog didn't refresh my memory. What was her point of view? That might help trigger this old brain to put 2 and 2 together!
ReplyDeleteNot sure the falling out was between Justin and Alton or if it was FN's plans for Justin's show that Alton didn't like. I'd love to know though.
ReplyDeleteYou're exactly right. It will be interesting to see whether FN proceeds with a Lenny show or not, after the publicity his online life has received.
ReplyDeleteI have Comcast, and it would be a price jump for me as well. I can't justify it.
ReplyDeleteIt was a train wreck. I can't stand her either.
ReplyDeleteRegardless of what that was all about, they should have pulled her off the air to salvage the show.
ReplyDeleteNikki's POV was meat on the side.
ReplyDeleteVerizon FIOS has cooking channel along with FN included
ReplyDeleteThanks! I remember thinking that was such a great POV because so many people are trying to eat healthier.
ReplyDeleteThat's cool. I wish they offered FiOS where we live. I keep checking and hoping!
ReplyDeleteI watched the beginning of this episode, I ended up turning off the show due to the behind the scenes nonsense that was going on. Also, Robert seemed to be screaming, literally screaming, at the camera. I don't know if it was my TV aka the volume or Foodnetwork itself but it was annoying.
ReplyDeleteShe said that the sales went up in June by $22K over June of last year, not $22K for the year. If she keeps this up, it will be $264K more for the year.
ReplyDeleteI think the fact that they have some uneducated child posting rude and poorly-written attacks to anyone who criticizes them on their FB page - and follow-up attacks from more family members - says it all. They claim to be a business, they need to act like one - alienating potential customers is not how you do that.
ReplyDeleteJust one example of the recent unprofessional posts, there are many, many more:
"Uncle Andy's Diner: This is what's wrong with america haters r going to hate and its usually the ones who have no idea. It sad how people who haven't visited before the show have options and its more sad that people don't understand about owning a diner and catering to people with not over price dinner menus. And FYI my fathers hash is home made so either u dont know the difference or u have never been in to try it. Or more then welcome to come in and see how we make it. Can looks like dog food

And then they (and family) argue back when you post a response.... this is what they recently replied: "Lets just all agree.....XXX is a clueless idiot. Is that grammatically correct enough for your bad manners and taste." and "Being fat and angry is no way to go through life".
I'd like to think this man, Dave, taught his children better manners, but I guess not. So, just proof that the restaurant isn't the only filthy thing up there.
not sure why this posted here, and not on the Uncle Andy's page... :(
ReplyDeleteWhy can't I read the info at the top? It's all a bunch of white lines on my laptop.
ReplyDeleteOK, now I've got it.
ReplyDeleteThe odds of people succeeding at marriage had little to do w/ the episode. Unfortunately, the couple made a tragic mistake - marrying quickly then jumping into an intense biz like food soon afterwards. Really, too much stress.
ReplyDeletewho is Lenny? has he been removed?
ReplyDeleteI got married at the Country Cow in May 2011 and couldn't have been happier. Can't wait to go back this weekend!
