America's Best Cook To Premiere in April on Food Network

Photo - Food Network
The competition shows keep on coming... America's Best Cook, which was casting back in October, will premiere April 13th on the Food Network.  Home cooks from across the country will be paired with Food Network chefs and be mentored by them for a chance at a $50,000 cash prize.  Cat Cora will mentor the South, Michael Symon the North, Alex Guarnaschelli the East, and Tyler Florence the West, and the show will be hosted by Ted Allen.

Sixteen home cooks will be divided into groups of four, and in the first episode, each of the chefs will pick two of the cooks to represent their team/region after tasting their dishes.  The show is described as follows:
"In each episode, the hand-picked cooks compete in a Group Challenge to prove they have what it takes to compete another day and to make their Food Network chef mentors proud. With direction and counsel from their mentors the cooks must raise the bar in every facet of their cooking. From elevating every day, tired dishes to restaurant quality cuisine to transforming savory ingredients into amazingly sweet desserts, these cooks must give it their all to impress the rotating guest judge and avoid the elimination round. The bottom four cooks dig deep for redemption as they face-off in the intense Pressure Cooker round where their final dishes are judged again by the guest judge who then determines who is safe for another week and who goes home. The finale puts the four remaining home cooks through three grueling, single elimination rounds until one cook along with their chef mentor is left standing as America's Best Cook. Special guests include Anne Burrell, Bobby Flay, Ron Ben-Israel, Marcel Vigneron and Geoffrey Zakarian."
This means this show will only be six episodes long with the first show getting the sixteen cooks down to eight.  In each of the following four episodes, one more person will be eliminated, and the final episode will have four cooks competing for the $50,000 prize.

My guess is that the eliminations will make it that there is one chef representing each region/mentor in the final challenge, which may make eliminations predictable.  Cat Cora hasn't been on the network in some time, so it is interesting that she is one of the mentors.

  1. Like all the shows on there now, I imagine it will be predictable. However, I actually like the cast mentioned--especially Ted Allen--so I know I'll probably watch.

  2. Love all the cook shows but my favorite is restaurant impossible

  3. Loved the lighting, but the bigger bulbs made it even better!

  4. It sounds like this show has a lot of similarities with ABC's "The Taste."

  5. I'm not a Ted fan, but I like the cast overall - especially Chef Alex. I'll definitely give it a shot.

  7. I find many of their new shows rather boring. Competition shows are all well and good, in moderation. People still like the cooking aspect I think. I also think they are burning people out on the same few chefs they are using for a lot of things - Guy Fieri, Bobby Flay, Rachael Ray and Alton Brown. Frankly I'm sick to death of Rachael and Guy. It's time for some new blood. Glad to hear Cat Cora is coming back!

  8. Bill Rancic, really? LMAO @ restaurateur of the popular restaurant RPM-Italian chain. The man owns the chain or is CEO. That doesn't make him a restaurateur for heaven's sake! If any of us had the money he and his wife have pulled in from that ridiculous show of theirs, we could be a restaurateur too!

  9. No words for that photo of Anne Burrell. The hair, the peek at the bra, just Anne.

  11. Damn Robert kicked Sheryl's butt. First time I see him go after a designer like that.

  12. Then what did she mean by the one day the truth will come out comment? I kinda smacks of "they are forcing me to be quiet for now, but eventually I will sing like a canary about how badly they treated me"

  13. I'm sure Robert Irvine is a nice person, but I'm sick of watching Mr. Musclebound, and he doesn't exactly have a winning record. He's so overexposed that it's wearing. Food Network needs to bring in some NEW talent.

  14. Now they are cloning "Worst Cooks" in reverse w/ "Best Cooks." Okay, I like Worst Cooks, so I will probably watch this because I love Alex and Tyler, but are there no original thinkers at FN anymore!

  15. I agree. I like Robert Irvine, but I'm tired of seeing him smash walls and windows. And I'm sick of his exaggerated expressions when tasting food at restaurants. I'm burnt out on this show.

  16. Wasn't there a similar show on PBS a few decades ago?

  17. I have ZERO tolerance for this person. Food Network needs new peeps to help with programming.

  18. Paula seen has the class of a drunken former stripper in a decrepit trailer park, long past her prime of the 1970s.

  19. Oh and Gina impressed Robert with her beauty, grace and smile and didn't have to impress him by climbing onto his back like a drunken COW girl at Gilley's after Slugging Tequlia, and ride him like he was a BUSTING BRONCO! She must of been wiping the sweat off AFTER she rode the RI Bronco! Wonder if she does ol` Captain Michael Groover that way? Must buy a lot of hankies! hahahahaha

  20. That is the reason why All in the Family would never survive a few episodes in this day and time. They would have to shut down because of all the bad threats and social media backlash!

  21. At least it is a credible prize--not a year's supply of crappy snack "food".

  22. It seemed like most of the contestants were either housewives that only cooked at home, or short order cooks from local diners. I did not expect any of them could have handled running a 24 hour kitchen in a Las Vegas hotel/casino. This contest would have been better suited to reward the winner with a job at one of the hotels from Hotel Impossible, which seem to be more along the lines of Marriot level hotels that can use mid-level cooks.

  23. Chef Irvine is married to an Asian model/wrestler, Gail Kim, and I wonder if his wife put any pressure on him. Seonkyoung was a very nice person, but it seemed like she was always running out of ingredients and did not have a personality for dealing with employees or controlling a kitchen.

  24. Oddly enough I just got a flyer from M Resort in the mail advertising both the restaurant and Seonkyoung

  25. Its not surprising. I mean look at Ramsey and Hell's Kitchen the winner is suppose to be the new executive chef of what ever new restaurant he's opening that season. Yet from the reports I've heard the winners either never get to claim their prize or are there for a very short time. After hearing winners from Chef Wanted are treated the same are any of us truly surprised that the winner from this show was kicked out so soon. I mean I don't believe she left on her own. After all you did to open this restaurant your walking away just 3 months later, seems a bit unrealistic.

Be truthful and ask yourself how you would feel if EVERY word out of YOUR mouth was judged and held up to the light as to it's content and what you might have "REALLY meant". Would you like it? Would pass the "test" every time according to what you might have meant (even if what you said was innocent in your own eyes and mind)? Paula didn't live in the time of slavery and denying the right of women to vote. What are you talking about in regards to Paula? Time changes things and ideas--good and bad. There are many other things that were made better or worse with the passage of time, but many who are doing the judging about Paula weren't alive to know about some of those. I'm glad I'm old enough not to be as judgmental of people as some of your younger people are. Remember--what goes around-comes around and Karma ALWAYS happens. Before you judge Paula, look at yourselves in mirror. What you think is acceptable now, your children, grandchildren and g-grands will be blaming you for in the future and they will be as intolerant as you are being now. That means all of us---
