Paula Deen 'People' Quote - Racist or Not?

As the Paula Deen comeback continues to be forced upon us, she will be gracing the cover of People magazine, which will be on newsstands this Friday.

When a company invested millions in her brand, you would expect a plan to be in place for the comeback.  Besides being on the cover of People, today it was also announced that she will be opening a 20,000 square-foot restaurant in Pigeon Forge, TN near Dollywood.  I am sure many more things are in the works, so I won't be doing a story of every step along the way.

Back to the People story that will be on newsstands Friday...  Eonline had a few quotes from the story, including this one:
"I feel like 'embattled' or 'disgraced' will always follow my name. It's like that black football player who recently came out," she tells People, referring to NFL prospect Michael Sam. "He said, 'I just want to be known as a football player. I don't want to be known as a gay football player.' I know exactly what he's saying."
Why the need to call him a "black football player"?  As he stated, he just wants to be known as a football player, but Paula referred to him as a "black football player."

What do you think about the quote? Did Paula have a slip of the tongue or no big deal?

  1. She's a racist bigot and always will be. Go to "Celebitchy" to read the comments there--some really smart people who are much more articulate than I am.
And point well taken about the "black football player." Ugh.

  2. She should just stop talking and she would be better off.

  3. I don't think she gets it.

  4. I can't believe People would put her on the cover.

  5. That's how she was raised. My father is from the south and of the same generation. They don't mean any harm and don't harbor any hatred for any race, but you just can't erase what had been ingrained into them since they were babies. Out doesn't make it politically correct, but doesn't make it harmful, either. As another post put it, she needs to just stop talking.

  6. I wish the press and most of Paula Deen's fans would stop acting like all her troubles were the result of her saying one bad word one time a couple decades ago. The real issues were things that went on in her restaurant run by her ignorant brother but for which she was responsible. As for her comeback "riding" that loathesome Robert Irvine - just ugh.

  8. God! Can we stop giving this phony bigot attention? No matter what, she just keeps sticking that big foot in her mouth! I never want to see her big head or hear her phony southern accent again!

  9. i honestly think it was simply a case of she could remember his name and was trying to come up with it based on what she remembered from seeing him on the news and it just accidently slipped out

  10. It's the way she's the world, so of course he's not merely a football player--he is a "black" football player, and people who see the world that way would never, ever recognize the stupidity of their view of the world.

  11. You're definitely entitled to disagree. We are all individuals with different feelings, thoughts, and beliefs. I could be completely wrong about her intent of the things she says. I'm not a fan of hers and never have been. I just thought I would offer a different perspective.

  12. She really needs to go away.

  13. I know. I can't believe they would put her and then on the other hand put kate Gosselin on it too and her kids and just recently kate and her 2 twin daughters ALL because she wants to be on tv.

  14. It is more than just using the word once. She has made it part of her vocabulary for decades. She also didn't properly pay her employees and would give them just a little money and liquor. One AA man said he didn't even drink. She didn't want them to even speak to the people at the events she would cater and make them stand in the heat. She enabled her brother to do what he pleased at the Shrimp Shack and harass people. Just saw a picture of her when she was at the Miami Food and Wine Festival. She was trying to drink tequila where she thought no one could see her. It was a round clear bottle with Tequila clearly written on it and she was bent over chugging the bottle. Google the image.

  15. So she can't call a black guy black now? Why isn't everyone jumping on her for referring to him as gay too? She should only have referred to him as that football player and nothing more.

  16. I accidentally hit the up button when I met to hit the down one. I don't think you get it, either, Cindy.

  17. Googled those images and wish I could get them out of my brain. She's not only swigging Tequila, but wiping sweat off her face, and licking her fingers WHILE cooking, and then riding Robert Irvine. She's not only vulgar but must be the most unsanitary cook I've ever watched, and I've seen her lick her fingers quite often while cooking. I would never eat anything she made.

  18. Sorry, Judy, I didn't mean to make you sick. I was going to put that she was wiping the sweat off her face, But I was too tired. Did you see her on Ellen DeGeneres when she was making peanut brittle? Anyway, the caramel sauce was perfect when you get a spoon and hold it up in the air and it flows like honey? Ellen did this and that stupid Paula got under it and opened her big mouth and yes, she did, got her tongue and stuck it out and let the caramel wrap around her tongue. IiRC, Ellen did too. DISUSTING VULGAR BEHAVIOR! I cant believe she found a bleeding heart to back her to start over. If the truth be known, it is probably HER MONEY!

  19. Judy and all I apologize for making anyone sick describing her behavior!

  20. LOL Lukebandit, no need to apologize--I knew what I was in for...I've watched it all far too often. When she was brand new on Food Network, I actually liked her...amazing how her accent did not stand out then. She's turned into a caricature of herself, and I don't believe there's one authentic bone in her body.

  21. She did a Knock! Knock! Door Dinners with Gordon her producer on her shows now back years ago! She looked totally different then than she does now. Money can buy you procedures. She looked much older. She and Gordon picked a random house and a young mom with about 4 kids who were running and jumping around and she was holding the baby and she was suppose to have dinner on and she was frazzled. I have always thought about her and how her and the kids turned out! Thy have to be in college by now and married! Paula went to her fridge and had a meal going in a few minutes. I liked the show that Curtis Stone did, BUT he ALWAYS picked privileged, rich slender women in Whole Foods. Never the opposite. Beautiful homes. Patios with big grills. So then I began to think fake. And it seemed like he just made barely enough food to feed them. Never apps, entrée, desert. drinks. Entrée on top of a side. You eat more in the hospital! lol Loved TYLER Florence on Food 911, about 10 years ago. Major crush on him! He went to a Southern girl's house who was living in NYC. He fixed her shrimp and grits and fried green tomatoes, something like that. I saw my first big jug ever of Sangria that he made. OH MY LANTA, I would have loved to have had a glass of that! Really like Tyler's Food Court. Love how Robert Irvine met his future wife Gina Lee at a Dinner Impossible challenge!

  22. Maybe the name of the restaurant "The Lady and Son's should be renamed "The Bigot and Sons" and instead of the "The Bag Lady", "The Bigot Lady". When she compared her situation with the football player who just came out, is mindboggling. Polar opposites! I bet her new PR firm, said, WHY WHY WHY, while banging their head on their desk!

  23. If you hit the Up button again, it will remove you. And then you can hit the Down arrow.

  24. Bigots can never keep their mouths shut. Especially this piece of... work.

  25. Really? Is that you, Paula?

  26. Yes, money can buy you a new face, but unfortunately, it can't buy a personality, as seen here.

  27. Just because these beliefs were acceptable years ago, doesn't mean they are acceptable now. What about slavery and denying women the right to vote?

  28. Both Mark Twain and Harry Truman came from racist, segregated societies, and both made turnarounds.

Of course, Paula Deen is nowhere near in their class.

  29. I did search for that and I wish I could unsee it! The picture on Robert Irvine's back *smh* and as for the tequila, she's drinking it for sure.
I do have to say I think it's wrong FN allowed Irvine back when he so blatantly lied. He shouldn't have been given another chance. He KNEW what he did was wrong.
