Food Network Related News and Links

Here is some recent news involving Food Network shows and chefs/personalities from the Food Network:

  • Justin Warner is trying to raise $15,000 through Kickstarter to build an outdoor enclosure for his restaurant Do or Dine.  I guess that Food Network contract isn't all it is cracked up to be if he is asking for handouts.
  • This past weekend was the Food Network In Concert event in Chicago, IL.  Here are a bunch of photos from the event, including a human pyramid, and someone being mistaken for Sunny Anderson.
  • A former manager of Tick Tock Diner in Clifton, NJ, which was featured on Diners, Drive Ins, and Dives, was sentenced to eight years in prison for trying to hire a hit man to kill his uncle (co-owner of restaurant) to gain greater control for himself.
  • Gibson Borelli won the 2nd season of Rachael vs. Guy: Kids Cook-Off last night and his web series is called Jersey Shore Kid.
  • The Paula Deen Network is launching this week, and the Wall Street Journal revealed yesterday that Paula Deen bought the rights to her Food Network shows (440 episodes plus un-aired footage).  So you probably will not be seeing any Paula Deen re-runs on the Food Network in the future.  Paula also has appearances this week on the Today show (Tuesday), and on The Chew (Friday).
  • Food Network alum David Rosengarten is trying to make a comeback and is relaunching the Rosengarten Report, which is his food newsletter.

  1. So did Lenny. What are the legal ramifications against FN for not giving to the NFNS winner what was fairly won?

  2. How has Lenny lost out? He *just* won.

If there IS a delay, it might be because of the comments he allegedly made about Ree Drummond.

  3. They really screwed up with Justin. He was their chance at broadening their demo and folding in a younger crowd, and they immediately put him out to pasture. Huge mistake.

Paula Deen's network has as much relevance as Sarah Palin's, and will probably be about as successful.

  4. You can bet the contracts they sign before filming NFNS have the "prizes" tied up legally so that if they don't want to give you a show, they don't have to. It's like on Hell's Kitchen. The prize there is head chef at a specific Gordon Ramsay restaurant, but the wording in the contract states something like 'or position qualified for' so some winners have become sous chefs and/or other chef positions after they've won. The $250,000 is the same regardless of position, but to protect his restaurants he had to do it that way.

  5. I highly doubt that FN didn't protect its ass fully. I am pretty certain that the contract signed has all kinds of stipulations where they don't have to give the winner a show.
And considering Lenny's antics, I am pretty sure that FN is well covered if they don't give him a show; which I sincerely hope they don't.

  6. When Alton reported that he wouldn't be producing Justin's show, he seemed pretty disappointed. It sounded like interference from FN. I'm guessing Justin was too alternative (which is JUST what they need). It's such a shame; I was really looking forward to his show. At least he got some good exposure. I'm definitely eating at his restaurant the next time I'm in NY.

  7. Why is it liberals have to interject their hateful political opinions into everything. You make the second one in a week.

    ReplyDelete
  8. That was hardly hateful. Deen and Palin go hand-in-hand.

  9. The point is this is a blog about the Food Network, not about politics. Everything is not political, nor does politics need to be brought into everything.

  10. I remember asking myself at the time why you purchase a restaurant because your fiancee was a server. So many people jump into this kind of business thinking you just throw food on a plate, open the doors and crowds appear. Crazy thinking.

  11. It's called "flipping" and it's free at the expense of the unaware Food Network.

  12. I they'd give it to him from day 1. He had the sob story, like the kid with cancer last season.

  13. I honestly loved all the kids, but I was also surprised Gibson won. I loved Finn...that kid was adorable and a great cook to boot. I agree with Andrea's assessment below. I also don't get the point of the "stars"--it did not matter in the end.

  14. Those kids were hilarious.

  15. If FN were so smart, they'd never had had Lecherous Lenny as a contestant in the first place

  16. You have no idea how successful Deen's network is going to be, nor Palin's for that matter. They are two different types of networks, so you can't compare them. As to their relevance, neither network would have been started if they didn't think there would be enough viewership to support themselves.

As for their demo's being similar, I wasn't aware cooking and politics drew the same demographics. In addition, Deen is a Democrat who campaigned and voted for Obama. Her demo is the polar opposite of Palin's, making your uninformed, liberal nutjob rantings invalid in every arena.

  17. Hey FN: have Rosengarten and Justin host a new version of In Food Today. Could be fun...like what Eater covers, add some live reporting. Air it at 6, like the evening news. Beats yet another DDD rerun.

  18. Ha! You were almost successful in engaging in a thoughtful debate until you felt compelled to be insulting at the end. Enjoy your anger management classes, friend!

  19. I just call them as I see them, nutjob and I see I can add hypocrite that list.

  20. Re-read your comment; I see I can add illiterate to yours. Epic fail, indeed.

  21. I know what they're doing. I just don't care to watch a show where people lie about being passionate about reinvesting themselves into their restaurants.

  22. Renae of El Bistro was the worst of the worst. She didn't even try to look convincing when professing her re-dedication to the restaurant business. The RI formula is growing old and tired, same scam......different people.

  23. May I continue? A MOUNTAIN OF BACON ON THE HOG TRAIN TO
    FLAVORTOWN!

  24. That is a crazy idea. Bobby Flay is married and Anne has a girlfriend and I think they are engaged to be married. This sounds like a fanatic fan they are looking for. SO WRONG!

  25. According to several folks who worked at 'Seven' there was little or no notice of the actual shutdown even though the owners had stated early on that it was for sale. Should have stayed as 'Reed's State Street Pub'. Owners tried to get too upscale in an area that has limited support for such a venue, the location was against them and the billboards and other ads didn't help when the location was hard to find. If they'd been on Lincolnway or another well-traveled street it would have helped a LOT. The food was decent but apparently not good enough to draw...

  27. You're quite welcome! I've been a fan (on FB) since you were on MC.

  28. We just saw a rerun of this one in Canada. Do they not HAVE the internet in Indiana? How does anyone in this day buy a freakin' restaurant & not know stuff like food/labor costs? Even if you ARE a neophyte goin in, there's no reason not to get up to speed on those basics quickly.
I did like the family though. I hope they're ok & all still together. I just hope they learned their lesson & nobody else's livelihood depends on them again!
