Renae's Corner From Restaurant Impossible Has Closed

Photo - Facebook
Renae's Corner in Titusville, Pennsylvania, which was featured on season nine of Restaurant Impossible has closed.  The restaurant posted the following message on their Facebook page on January 13th, 2015:

"Today was our last day open. Thanks to everyone that supported me and came to eat."
That is not very descriptive, and the Titusville Herald's attempts to reach the restaurant for comment went unanswered.

When Restaurant Impossible came to the restaurant, it was called El Bistro, and the show decided to change the name to Renae's Corner.  You may remember that the restaurant was listed for sale before the episode even aired on the Food Network.  I guess they were unable to sell, so have decided to close.  This is the second restaurant from season nine of Restaurant Impossible to close and the Restaurant Impossible Update page has been updated with this information.  The closing comes just four months after their episode first aired.

  1. I'm not surprised. Renae didn't seem to really want to be there, and it was so neglected. I doubt she really put time and effort into assuring the place would last. She just wanted the money, and when it wouldn't sell, time to close. Some people just aren't meant to own a restaurant.

  2. This is precisely why Gordon Ramsay stopped doing Kitchen Nightmares. Once the famous chef and the cameras leave, most of them go right back to what got them in trouble in the first place.

  3. While that is true for the US KN, he is returning to do more UK versions (which are a thousand times better than the US KN). But I still fully agree with your statement.

  4. No. That's the revenue that the restaurant lost once the drinks were stolen.

  5. Complaining about RI is often more fun than watching the show these days.

  6. I agree. Irvine needs to be more sparing in his counselor work. Once a season and only if it's both necessary and fixable by a chef and not a real therapist.

  7. This episode was memorably bad as television. While it really sucks if you lost money on the place or needed to work there, but based on the episode, it's probably for the best the place shut down. As someone who has regrettably mailed it in at work, the owner looked like she just wanted out. I hope she finds something more suitable to pay the bills.

  8. So now a motorcycle shop's cafe to go with the snack bar at a 9-hole golf club and the bar at a bowling alley. Would they do a convenience store or bait shop next? "You need to make these go-go taquitos fresh before you stick them under a heat lamp for six hours!"

  9. Sad, yet true.

  10. Agree 1,000%.

It was a nice change of pace/return to the norm to see Robert helping some well-intentioned, decent business get on the right track with their BUSINESS.

This is a case wherein the owners seemed to have the right ingredients, more or less. They just needed a great big reality check on the business side of things. And they were receptive to what Robert had to offer.

Seems as if these guys probably are a little more interested in running a custom motorcycle shop than running a full-on 'restaurant.' But, now that they have been given some better tools to work with (pun intended) in the restaurant, maybe the place can be successful. Maybe now they can have a successful motorcycle customization shop AND a great little restaurant upstairs.

The restaurant does look like a really cool place, too. As a person who isn't even into motorcycles, I'd probably stop in for a burger and a beer once in a while. I mean, if they did, indeed, tweak their menu so that they have some unique offerings that still feel like they belong in an cool-but-casual-quasi-biker-place in New Mexico, then they really could make a decent little business out of it.

I hope we see more shows like this one and, as others already have said, fewer shows (or none at all) that end up being a cut-rate version of Dr. Phil - which is already pretty cut-rate to begin with.

  11. Did anyone see the comments at the end of the episode where

Taniya took off with some one percenters and now she's living on the road

  12. Not much yelling by Robert on this episode. No doubt the group of biker men wouldn't tolerate being yelled at or humiliated. I think they intimidated Robert and that kept Robert behaving in a more respectful manner.

  14. I'm just hoping the return to the UK will also mean a return to the original UK format. No ham-acting narrator; no loud, overwrought music; no screaming for screaming's sake. I want to see the calmer, more professional Gordon doing his thing like in the old days.

  15. She was such a phony on the show...pretending that she wanted the restaurant to work. What a bunch of BS.

  16. From the previews I saw, it looks like we will be seeing the calmer and more professional Gordon than what Fox wants him to be. Fox is to blame for him acting like a pompous ass on TV, sadly, they think that's what attracts people.

    ReplyDelete
  17. Exactly! But sadly, people only know Gordon through the shitty Fox variations and nothing more.

  18. If you get Netflix, you can watch the original Kitchen Nightmares. I liked it much better.

  19. I loved the UK versions! Like you, I wish they'd go back to that.

  20. He's wonderful with the little kids in Masterchef Jr. All 3 of the judges are, except sometimes Bastianich gets a bit rough with them. IMO, Ramsay is in his element with these kids. I love watching the Junior version. Plus those kids just make me smile & often, when some are cut, I cry.

  21. Lenny, you spell it RODE.

  22. Ramsay has four kids of his own, and if you've ever seen The F Word, you've seen what a terrific father he is.

And Bastianich has left the MasterChef franchise, so no need to worry about him any longer.

  23. What gets me is that BBC America is advertising the new Ramsay's Kitchen Nightmares as Ramsay's Kitchen Nightmares: UK as if the horrible Fox travesty was the original.

    ReplyDelete
  24. Hubby & I both said almost that exact thing. He said people that watched him on Fox will be waiting for THAT version of Gordon Ramsay to appear & will be disappointed.

    ReplyDelete
  25. Yes, his kids are great & he's wonderful with them. I'd seen on Twitter that Bastianich was leaving. I'm glad because even with the adults on Master Chef he can absolutely be just cutting. Ramsay & Graham would criticize contestants, but I felt Joe was outright mean sometimes.
I don't know much about the chef that is replacing Joe. It will be interesting to see how she works out. I read on a blog by someone that was on Master Chef Season 2, that the first few seasons Joe was petrified of having to speak on camera & that's where his on-screen persona came from. The people making the show would tell him to just say hmmm or something, trying to get him comfortable.

  27. Yes - I misstated in my post.

The restaurant didn't make $1 million in profits. They recorded $1 million in revenue. Vastly different figures. (Especially if overhead and labor aren't included.)

I was just making the point that if you're able to get $1 million to come through your front door in a year's time, then it seems as if you should have something left after all of the bills are paid.

Of course, running a restaurant isn't cheap. And San Antonio is a big, expensive city. Maybe it takes more than $1 million just to keep the bills paid. That's very possible.

But, after seeing the so-called 'owners' of The Knife & Fork in action, we have a pretty decent understanding of how and why the financial side of things went off the rails.

  28. Based on those reviews, this place didn't seem all that great. It's rather interesting how restaurants are picked for the show. Also, did they change the appearance just for the show? Is that what that one comment is saying?

  29. She seemed like one of those lazy girls who has always gotten her way by getting some man to help her out. "Robert, I really need you to save me!" Barf. She used the show to fix up the place and deal with all the deferred maintenance, and then she sold up. But I guess the show uses her to get an episode, so it's all even. But she was not likable at all.

    ReplyDelete
  30. Like stripping, maybe? She wouldn't have to get up early for that either.

    ReplyDelete
  31. I think she just wanted Robert to come in and clean the place up so she could try to sell it. Didn't work out for her--too bad. She didn't deserve all the hard work the RI crew put into her sorry restaurant.

    ReplyDelete
  32. I agree. So often these shows become victims of their own success and move away from what made them good in the first place.

    ReplyDelete
  33. Did not like her from the start of the episode. Typical stripper... they will play along and say anything to get the $$$.

  34. Watching this last night it seems like this woman has some book smarts but no common sense. Which, all the college education in the world can't make up for a lack of basic common sense. She put no more care into having this restaurant than she did into making not one, not two, but four kids with no father in sight (something's not right with a woman who's as reasonably attractive as she is with no man anywhere around, for that matter). And IMHO bringing in RI was an attempt to cash out on it, rather than just walk with the $30,000 she was offered she hoped to sell it for enough to pay off her bills and have money left over.

I don't feel bad for her and I wasn't too surprised to see she'd thrown in the towel.

  36. When someone uses RI only to get a free renovation and closes before the show even airs, they should have to repay the $10,000 to Food Network and also minimum wage to all of the people that volunteered to help them. That might stop these thieves from doing that. People like that make me wanna puke!
