Food Network's mistake was to over-emphasize "camera-presence-at-all-costs" TOO SOON and in their eliminations. When it was announced that she had trouble staring down the camera, to me it seemed nearly unbelievable (or at least surprisingly doubtful) as she had been really growing and coming into her own. She knew how to cook and people loved her humor, Then, suddenly, she was gone. The outcry was HUGE! There was a blog-thread with over 1000 posts. People were outraged that she was gone. It got so bad they had to start a 2nd thread/discussion. There was also yet a 3rd thread which asked: of those eliminated, who would you MOST like to see come back?
EMILY! By 5 country miles. It wasn't even close.

Think about this: what if Emily (or Ippy) had won instead of Justin?
What if Brad Sorenson would have won in his year instead of that seasons winner? What if someone with a wider range of dishes would have won instead of Jeff the sandwich king?
How much better off would the Food Network already be, now?
Thank God the public chose Damaris Phillips this last season. She is desperately needed and will be a joy to watch. --Crouton40Crouton40noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8808060991534955915.post-10663792616627566412013-12-07T08:33:15.639-05:002013-12-07T08:33:15.639-05:00Justin sabotaged himself. It honestly isn't. Temptalia, a make-up blogger has 72,000+ fans. @LOLGOP a political blog has over 150,000. A Vampire Diaries fansite has 270,000+. Chefs like Spike from top Chef has 42,000.

I'm glad you're excited, but there is hardly a mandate for her. :)Carrienoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8808060991534955915.post-84387721960879261722013-12-07T08:33:07.657-05:002013-12-07T08:33:07.657-05:00I acknowledge what you say. But I will simply add ...I acknowledge what you say. But I will simply add that:
1. In Politics, I'm not surprised that the number is far higher as that's always a hotly debated topic. 2. Yes, Spike from Top Chef has many more, too. But--that's sorta like expecting Damaris to have as many followers as Alton Brown. How long has Spike already been around? Damaris is just getting started. Do any of the other people who competed against her in Season Nine have 9000? I would suspect none of them do. Possibly Viet, as he once beat Bobby Flay. If Nikki or Stacey do, then I will say it is likely because they have a website. Damaris doesn't. She isn't on the radio like Nikki and she doesn't own a restaurant like Stacey. And I would have to re-hunt for it, but I seem to remember reading (in one of Justin Warner's Rebel Recaps? Somewhere..) that Damaris had the largest increase of followers during a season competition..?..or the most twitter followers of any previous FNS contender. Something like that. So, looking at it that way, I think it is kinda amazing. But even pushing numbers aside....it still is very nice to see a winner who: 1, Makes a variety of dishes very well (as opposed to everything is a pie) and 2. Who is outgoing and down to earth (contrast that with Danushka's sarcasm). 3. Who can teach (I wonder how many famous cooks would suck at teaching/explaining/being on camera. 4. Who wins on ability and likability and not because she dresses weird, has an "edge" or makes strange dishes that practically nobody would serve and tries to call it "unique." Good reasons to like her. I'm not saying she can't ever do any wrong. I'm not saying I will even like every dish. For example, I hate green beans. No biggie. Even an Iron Chef occasionally loses. They're still awesome. One more thing (again numbers aside)--we all have our own preferences, but speaking for myself, if I consider some winners before Damaris..i.e..Aarti, Justin and Jeff Mauro...by far, I would prefer Damaris over any of them. So...for someone who doesn't own a restaurant, or have a website, etc.it doesn't have to be a mandate. Her win is still quite impressive.
