On The Rocks - Lock & Key Speakeasy (Oxford Inn)

Tonight at 10pm is the series premiere of On The Rocks on the Food Network.  On The Rocks is a bar makeover show where bar expert John Green tries to turn around struggling bars.  It seems to be Food Network's attempt at the concept of Spike TV's Bar Rescue, but instead of having Jon Taffer, they are using John Green.  Or you could say it is a Restaurant Impossible for bars, but instead of Robert Irvine, it is John Green.

The Food Network decided to put On The Rocks in the exact same time slot as new episodes of Bar Rescue on Spike TV, which I don't think was very smart.  I am not sure if this was done on purpose, or it happened to just be a coincidence, but many viewers of Bar Rescue would probably be interested in On The Rocks if it was in a different time slot.

The first episode of On The Rocks is at the Oxford Inn in Royal Oak, Michigan.  Here is some background information of the Oxford Inn for this episode:

  • The Oxford Inn has been around for 26 years and is the longest standing restaurant in Royal Oak.
  • Back in January of this year, the Oxford Inn decided to change its name to Bobby's Nashville Bar and Grill (Link).  The owner Bob Higgins was trying to capitalize on the popularity of country music, but his customers didn't seem too happy with the change.
  • In May, Bob decided to change the name of the restaurant back to the Oxford Inn (Link).  He did this due to half of his customers thinking the restaurant was under new ownership and admitted the 'country thing has really messed me up.'  There was also an issue with local officials over a dance permit.
  • The owners built a bar on the back of their restaurant with hopes to get more business and increase liquor sales.  This is the area that will be made over by On The Rocks.  That area will become Lock & Key Speakeasy during the episode.  So, the Oxford Inn will remain the Oxford Inn, and the bar area behind the restaurant will be the Lock & Key Speakeasy.

As the success of makeover shows usually depends on the host, the success of On The Rocks will probably depend on John Green.  Obviously people will be comparing him to Jon Taffer and Robert Irvine.  Let me know what you thought of the show after it airs and if you like John Green.

  1. I'm guessing a supermarket makeover show is next.

  2. Well, at least his language is better than Taffer's.

  3. I liked the fact that he didn't try to be John Tapper. I did really like the makeover. I would go there for a drink with friends. I will definitely watch again to see if it stays interesting.

  4. No mention of all those companies that probably gave all the tables, light fixtures, glassware, etc.. I am sure they were promised a mention on air as all these makeover shows do?

  5. I actually thought it was a pretty good show. Very formulaic, like Restaurant Impossible, but on a semi-sane timeline and without the dumb budget being brought up all the time. The finished product looked nice and was an interesting concept. I'll probably watch this a time or two more and see how it all keeps.

  6. I watched it and I prefer Bar Rescue. I would have liked to have seen something at the end or on the website. Lock and Key used to do X a month and now they are doing Y a month after 8 or 12 weeks or something. Just like Bar Rescue and RI.

  7. I wasn't a huge fan of John Green. He seems emotionless and the expression on his face rarely changes. He definitely doesn't have the charisma of Robert Irvine.

  8. This show followed the same formula as RI but with John Green who is a far cry from warm and fuzzy but he's not loathsome like Robert Irvine so I'll watch again. I do wish TV hosts would stop all the hugging. Do people really feel better after being hugged by a total stranger? I'd hate it.

  9. Things are now at the point that there are enough rescue programs to make a network unto itself.

  10. I'm pulling for a network makeover show.

  11. I guess it didn't do well. It's gone from Sunday at 10 and now shows up Wednesday at 11 for the next 2 weeks.

  12. The show was boring, to put it simply. Any obstacles were quickly glossed over and under developed. Jon Taffer on Bar Rescue makes an effort to connect with the owners and staff of the establishments that he "rescues". Also, there was little to no mention of what Green added to the place to make it more successful, again simply glossing over information.

As a network, The Food Network has become tired, formulaic, and contrived. I was a huge FN supporter, but my appreciation for them has dwindled over the past two years to the point of maybe watching one or two episodes a month. Slightly over 19% of their weekly programming is Diners, Drive-Ins, and Dives, and a lion's share is cheesy scripted "reality" drivel or contest cooking. They need to shake things up, clean up the pantry, and get chefs who want to cook and entertain! Look back over the past five years and see how the personalities of Guy Fieri, Bobby Flay, Alton Brown, and Robert Irvine have deteriorated. They need to take some time off and find their passion again. Like Anne Burrell said, "I'm sick and tired of seeing myself every time I turn on the TV." Maybe the network just needs some new brass? Food for thought. Pun intended.

  13. they already painted over the lock & key logo, and from their website it appears they have abandoned the speakeasy concept. Royal Oak is a hopping place, but the Oxford Inn is a half mile from the action. No amount of making over will fix that.

  14. Even though I'm over the show, I like Bar Rescue better. This seems a little too scripted and voiced over.

  15. I like the show in general... I would like updates!! I really really hate how John says this "joint"... If this was my "joint"... This "joint" needs to be rescued... Etc!! It drives me crazy!!
