Justin Warner and Alton Brown Together Again

If you have been following Alton Brown's podcast, The Browncast, he has been having new podcasts every Friday.  This Friday, last Food Network Star winner Justin Warner was on the Browncast.  As I am sure you are aware, Alton Brown was supposed to produce Justin Warner's show as part of the prize of winning Food Network Star, but did not end up producing Rebel Eats.  Justin also only got a 1 episode pilot that aired primetime rather than the usual 6 episode season airing during the daytime.

So, did Justin reveal anything about Food Network Star or any upcoming plans with the Food Network?

There was a little bit of talk about his experience on Food Network Star and also who he still talks to.
Justin also talked about the filming of Rebel Eats and how the production company (who Alton set him up with) pretty much let him do whatever he wanted.  There was also a lot of talk about the people he encountered on Rebel Eats.

At the end of the interview, Alton asked Justin (regarding Rebel Eats) if he was going to do it again?  Justin said, "Heck yeah!"
Then Alton followed up with "Has somebody said, 'Go, do that?'" to which Justin responded, "Not yet"

So, of course Justin wants to do more episodes, but it doesn't look like the Food Network has it in their plans yet.

Here is the link to whole podcast if you are interested in listening.

Also, next week Alton will have the three Food Network Star finalists, and the following week (Aug. 16th), he will have the Food Network Star winner on.

  1. What was the point (or is) of NFNS if they aren't going to have the winner do a series? Or at least more then just one show?

  2. I think this also marks first time in a while that the previous winner didnt "guest judge" in the following season. But seriously- Justin was a winner that FNS had never had & was different and they totally threw him under the bus...

  3. I've suspected for quite awhile that what happened with Justin was at least as much his doing as the network's. I suspect he might have balked at doing a regular cooking show.

  4. I'm so confused by all this. I would think that upon winning, there was some kind of contract written. Was it written in an way that FN did not, in fact, HAVE to offer them a show? Or was it Justin that backed out?

  5. I'm guessing that FN didn't know what to do with him. His personality and his higher concept food was really more of a fit for Cooking Channel, not FN. FN doesn't care about that any more, they are all about personality and he doesn't fit in to that mold.

  6. He said at least twice in the interview that he loves learning new stuff, so the Rebel Eats format sounded like a perfect fit, but I doubt NF gets his brand of offbeat humor. It's a shame because he's obviously very smart and talented.

  7. What happened with Justin makes me think that TNFNS does not have many more seasons left. I've watched it for several seasons and it seems to be running out of steam. I won't miss it when it goes.

  8. Considering they already have the casting site up for Season 10 of FNS, this seems like it will go on and on....

  9. They are completely wasting this kids talent....Utterly ridiculous

  10. Hard to believe FN execs just blindly opted not to do Wilson's show. Seems to me there's a story behind the story here, but sadly one to which we'll likely never be privvy. That's too bad.

  11. As I have said repeatedly, unfortunately FN has fallen victim as so many stations these days to using actors for the these so-called competitions to create drama and increase viewers. If you look at the bios posted for the show Worst Cooks in America, those folks were not 'everyday at home cooks', they were actors or actor wannabees. I kept thinking I recognized a couple of so called randomly selected at home cooks, and realized one guy was a contestant on the reality show Glass House because I could not stand his constant smile and smart mouth (dead giveaway!) from the GH show. Another woman was a former contestant on some other reality show. What a shame Food Network that you have to stoop so low.

  12. How horrible that they didn't give him his show! Losing interest in this network as more and more issues anger me. Where all the cooking shows? Why the devil is Diners, Drive-ins and Dives on CONSTANTLY?? Agree with the others, what's the point of the competition then and don't they feel a little obligated to give the prize to the winner any more? "rolling eyes"

  13. Really not surprised that Justin never got to do his show. The FN has become a joke network. They would never bring someone who is intelligent and interesting on this channel when they can churn out another fake hidden camera series. The NFNS is just another phony series that use to be fun to watch, but became more predictable and boring.I guessed the "winner" of this season's dull and needlessly long finale, and I think I'll skip the 10th season.

  14. I will watch anything Alton has to do with, including Cutthroat Kitchen. We pulled for Alton's team, especially Martie (she's from here) and Justin.

My wife and I kept looking to see when Justin pops up again. He should have gone past one episode. Maybe there was a personality conflict between what he was promised in the contract and what he expected. Naturally, on-screen it was all smiles while disappointing surprises lurked off-screen.

I wouldn't be surprised if it was some kind of tug-of-war, involving Bob T. and Susie F. with Justin and Alton left wondering why, afterward. Surely, we'll see more of Justin, unless he is somehow banned from Food Network because of his differences with them. I hope not.

  15. I am so disgusted with Food Network lately....first the Paula thing and now Justin...I agree that he got thrown under the bus.

  16. Food Network has treated the winners of NFNS badly for years now. I would love to see more quality programming featuring recent winners of the show OTHER than Guy Fieri. If nothing else, Food Network has succeeded in completely over saturating their network with him.

  17. Seriously, NFNS was a fairly pointless show in the past, but the Food Network has dropped to a new low, even for them. The network has turned into a yawn fest -and this latest antic only shows how ridiculous and desperate they've become.

  18. Apparently it's FN most watched show

  19. The winner of the following season ( 9) NFNS... Damaris Phillips has had quite a few episodes on the Food Network and they are really good.. I really like her show "Southern At Heart"
